How this is worked out

Equipment: 4U across patching, switching and any servers/UPS/NVR.
PDU: 0U vertical PDU assumed (no rack U consumed).
Spare growth: +1U (25%) so the rack is not packed to 100%.
Cabinet: 6U wall-mount, standard (≤600 mm).
Tip: best practice adds a 1U cable manager beside each switch/patch panel — consider adding more.

Before you commit

U total is an estimate — confirm each device’s actual U height, rail type (square-hole vs round/threaded) and 2-post vs 4-post needs before ordering.
Heavy gear (rackmount UPS, servers) needs a 4-post rack, rated rails and a floor-loading/weight check — UPS batteries are heavy.
Leave airflow/thermal and cable-management space; do not plan to 100% of the cabinet.
This is a planning estimate, not a certified rack elevation or data-centre design.

Assumptions

Standard U heights: patch panel/switch/1U server 1U each; 2U servers, NVR and rackmount UPS 2U each.
A horizontal PDU adds 1U; vertical (0U) PDUs consume no rack U.
Spare growth headroom of 25% is added before recommending a cabinet size.
The recommendation is the nearest standard cabinet size up from the total U.
