MSPs win when procurement becomes repeatable. A standard office kit gives every small client the same operating baseline: known firewall class, known switch family, predictable WiFi, enough rack space, clean power and a renewal path you can support later.

The mistake is turning “standard” into a single fixed SKU list. Stock moves, vendors revise models, and one office with concrete walls or a crowded comms cupboard can break the template. Use a standard kit as a controlled pattern, then verify the exact bill of materials before each deployment.

The core kit

Start with the control plane:

  • Firewall or gateway sized for the WAN speed with security features enabled.
  • PoE switch with enough access ports, uplinks and power budget.
  • WiFi access points sized for both coverage and device density.
  • Patch panel, patch leads and labels so support is not guesswork.
  • Wall cabinet or rack with enough depth and spare RU.
  • PDU and UPS for the modem, gateway, switch and AP power path.
  • Any licence, support or cloud-management subscription required for operation.

For a one-room office, this might be compact. For a 40-person office, it quickly becomes a racked kit with multiple APs, higher PoE budget and a larger UPS. The workflow stays the same.

Standardise the decision rules

Good MSP kits use thresholds:

Should every client get the same network kit?
No. Standardise the pattern, not the exact SKU. Keep a preferred firewall class, switch size, AP tier, rack size and UPS band, then adjust for ports, PoE budget, wall density, WAN speed and stock reality.
What should an MSP include in a small office kit?
At minimum: gateway/firewall, PoE switching, WiFi access points, patching, rack or wall cabinet, PDU, UPS, labels, spare patch leads and a documented handover. Remote monitoring and licence renewals should be planned at the same time.
